ABOUT ME
I came to a writing career out of nowhere, no formal training, no previous experience. Before moving to the East Coast, I managed a legal association of 1,500 lawyers in California. In 1998 I landed a job with a regional newspaper in New Jersey after taking an adult ed course in journalism for fun. The instructor, who happened to be the editor/owner The Hunterdon County Democrat, thought I had natural talent and offered me a job. It was baptism by fire in the newsroom, where I learned to write tight, be accurate, interview the unwilling, engage readers, and do it all under deadline. I wrote a humor column as therapy, which proved to be popular. I was hooked on column writing.
I moved to Massachusetts in 2000 and my freelance writing appeared in various publications, such as The Milton (MA) Times, The Patriot Ledger, The Boston Globe, Writer's Magazine, and The Huffington Post. Even though I considered myself a humor columnist, I ended up writing a twice-monthly religion column for The Patriot Ledger (proving that God has a sense of humor). In late 2007, my column was syndicated by its parent corporation, GateHouse News Media. In 2012, I was invited by Gatehouse to write a national spirituality blog, Suzette's Spiritual Cafe.
I joined the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (www.columnists.com) and became president (2004-2006). I had applied advice from award winning columnists to my own work, which enjoyed a quantum leap forward. It lead to my writing The Art of Column Writing: Insider Secrets from Art Buchwald, Dave Barry, Arianna Huffington, Pete Hamill and Other Great Columnists (Marion Street Press, 2008). Since I had access to such great writers, why not mine that rich vein for others? My award winning book is carried nationally in journalism schools, and is due to be available in Mainland China this fall (2012).
I love to teach other writers. What joy, what satisfaction in helping others to find their voices and the courage to express their thoughts and share their stories! I present writing workshops nationally, such as The Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop, The National Society of Newspaper Columnists, The National Scholastic Press Association, The Will Rogers Writers Workshop, Cape Cod Writers, The Florida Writers Association, UMass Worcester, DePaul University, Northeastern University, and many more.
I created a writing CD, Suzette Standring: A Writers Meditation CD, which offers two guided imageries aimed at relaxation and writing creativity. (I was certified in hypnotherapy in 1990.) Imagine my surprise to discover after the tape recordings were completed, that my sound engineer, Jeff Largent, had received an Academy Award for sound engineering on the movie, Braveheart!
It's All Write With Suzette is my half-hour TV program about the craft of writing, which airs weekly on Milton (MA) Cable Access TV. Since 2010, my show has featured guest columnists and authors who share insights into the process of writing and their latest works. The show is just another offshoot of my passion to nudge others into the waters of the writing pool.
